Summertime Swing

I don't know about you, but I'm just about ready for summer. One month to go!

Here is a piece I made for my agent's promo email she's sending out this week. The theme was boys + spring/summer activity.

I've always wanted a tire swing.

Sana, Sana

I just finished this illustration for Houghton Mifflin/Harcourt to accompany a Spanish rhyme to be included in materials for their educational program.

The rhyme is said to have magical healing power. Parents gently rub or tap their fingers over a cut, bruise, or other injury in a circular motion, repeating the rhyme, and the injured child quickly feels better. "Sana" means heal.

Sana, Sana
Sana, sana,
carita de rana,
Si no sanas hoy,
sanarás mañana.

Heal, Heal
Heal, Heal,
My little frog face.
If you don't heal today,
you'll heal tomorrow.

Doodles Du Jour

I'm going to attempt to make something more of my doodle paintings, which means amassing enough of them to actually be able to sell originals and prints at art fairs and that sort of thing someday. To reach this goal, I'm going to try to always have a doodle painting in progress so that I can chip away at it amidst other illustration work. This week I completed two new works which I'm pretty happy with.

Here is A Drop in Time

And You Are a Tourist.

You might recall that I name each doodle is after a song that I was either listening to while creating the doodle or one that I feel represents the feeling of the finished piece. It's one of my favorite parts of the process.

All my doodles can be purchased as prints through DeviantArt.com, and originals can be purchased on an individual basis via emailing me at: courtney@slumberlandstudio.com.

Kyna's Quest Mock Cover

Decided to continue the fun I was having and expand into a mock book cover for this imaginary story.
I wish I could design books all day. Or write them.

Kyna's Quest

Here's the finished portfolio piece. I can't believe it, but it only took me one day and I actually had fun making it. Refreshing. Plus it has my favorite colors AND a castle.
As always, I get to thinking about some sort of accompanying story whenever I make a random portfolio piece like this, and although I don't quite know what it is, I do know this Irish Princess's name is Kyna, and there's more to this horse than meets the eye. ;)

Promo Piece Sketch

Just having some fun sketching a promo piece for a spot on my agent's 2012 Directory of Illustration ad. I started out with trying to make something "girly" and "whimsical," and got this. I feel a story coming on...
